First Look at the All New 2019 Ram 1500

The theme of the 2019 Ram 1500….. the No Compromise Truck, leading in durability, technology and efficiency. It defines the future of trucks with its innovative technology, high-strength steel, storage and top-notch interior.

There is so much awesome in this one truck that it is going to be hard to harness it all in this short review.

Let’s begin with the fact that there are six different trim levels. Tradesman (base model) pricing begins at $31,695 on up to the Limited edition for $53,890. All truck models have a standard 3.6-liter V-6 Pentastar Upgrade eight-speed automatic transmission and eTorque, providing significant gains in fuel efficiency. The 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 engines are optional. The eTorque adds up to 90-lb-ft of torque to the 3.6-liter V-6 and 130 lb-ft of torque to the Hemi V-8.

The frame on the 1500 features 98% high-strength steel, yet the overall weight reductions total nearly 225 pounds net compared to the previous model. The 1500 is lighter, longer and wider, the overall cab length increased 4 inches. It is incredible how much passenger room is in this truck. The back seat passengers will be pleasantly surprised and not just because of the extra inches but their rear seats recline too!  While on the subject of happy passengers, there is an optional wireless charging dock and up to five USB ports. With WiFi capability (read on), your Ram 1500 can serve as your office on-the-go!

The storage compartments are second to none. The center console alone can house my laptop and not only does it have a safe place to sit without sliding around, it also has a charger in the storage compartment for charging while I drive! And I love that the storage compartments are ‘flocked’ and not just plastic.

The Ram 1500 offers 12 different storage configurations, enabling you to have a say in what will surely be the most active “interior real estate.” The floor of the truck has RamBins and expandable under the seat storage. Now, the last storage compartment I want to mention is the “RamBox.” This is the only¬†truck on the market to have a storage compartment integrated on the side rails of your truck. (The Rambox is an added feature that runs $995).

Another first is the application of the 12-inch fully configurable touchscreen with tailor-made graphics for various Ram models. This is Ram’s fourth-generation Uconnect system with the all-new SiriusXM industry exclusive 360L personalized listening experience. This system learns your listening habits! It provides smart content and will recommend thousands of hours of on-demand audio. And for your hours of listening pleasure, enjoy the Harman Kardon audio system with 19 speakers, 900-watt surround sound amplifier and 10-inch subwoofer. Pretty powerful for a pickup! Also included is 4G WiFi hotspot capability, this connects to your personal hotspot. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are available with 8.4 inch or 12-inch touch-screens.

Other new news to note: The full LED Adaptive Front lighting system (AFS) includes twin bi-functional projector headlamps, fog lamps and tail lamps. The integrated parking sensors are now in the fog light bezels and lower grille. There is a blind-spot monitor on the taillights, as well as a camera on the lift-gate. The interior has a 360-degree surround view camera that gives a bird’s eye-perspective of the truck. The navigation system uses voice commands for destination entry with enhanced 3-D map graphics.

I did not personally do any towing, but for those of you that do……Maximum payload increased to 2300 lbs and maximum trailer tow to 12,700 lbs.

Ahhh, I saved the best for last, driving impressions. The Ram 1500 drives like a truck for the most part. Obviously on the highways, it was smooth sailing. There was nothing jarring about being on the backroads at all, but while it wasn’t velvety or undisturbed, it was pleasant and agreeable. When we took the Ram 1500 off-road into the desert its performance was pretty remarkable. It was clearly capable of climbing and descending, maneuvering through the sand and over rocks and other desert elements. If you enjoy taking your vehicles off-road, you should consider the new 4×4 Off-road package, which includes suspension with one-inch lift, electronic locking rear axle, tuned shocks and Hill-descent Control.

Ram delivers the best combination of ride, handling and comfort of any pickup currently on the market and with more than 100 safety features, what more could you ask for in a truck?

The 2019 Ram 1500 is built in Sterling Heights, Michigan.
