A monumental task has been underway at AT&T Stadium this week as 550 truckloads of dirt have been dumped for the Monster Energy Supercross event.
Coming out and talking one on one with these guys is one of my favorite media events of the year. Riding dirt bikes is a brutal sport as is, competing with others who are just as passionate is demanding. “It keeps you physically and mentally on top of your game,” said Kyle Cunningham.
Riders like Kyle Cunningham and Trey Canard are equally excited when the event is so close to home and their families can join the crowd of spectators. Kyle is representing his hometown of Aledo, Texas while Trey is from Edmond, Oklahoma.
Last year’s Rookie of the Year, Cole Seely says to expect new dirt in Arlington this year and the riders couldn’t be happier. “I don’t know what they added to it, but the new dirt is better for racing. The past year’s was hard packed and by the time the night show came around it was like concrete, and tougher to race on.” Riding for his eighth season professionally, Cole is in his second season as a 450 class rider, he says he enjoys it more because, “the bikes have more power, there is more technique and competitiveness and it is slightly more forgiving in points if you have a bad race.”
Also riding for team Honda is Trey Canard. Trey has always been a crowd favorite and in spite of a few set backs we still see him frequently on the podium.
The showdown going into Saturday’s race has the top three point leaders Dungey, Roczen, and Anderson competing for the 450 class crown.
How did it all shake out? In the Main Event for the 250 class it was a brutal race for 1st between Christian Craig and Cooper Webb. Both boys raced clean, but it was Webb who was relentless and pulled out the win!
The 450 class Main Event had me on the edge of my seat with Ryan Dungey and Ken Roczen showing us how man and machine work together flawlessly. Even though Dungey took the lead briefly in the beginning, it was Roczen who took home his second Main Event win of the year.
